What does Amy Johnson’s Gipsy Moth, astronaut Tim Peake’s descent from space and a Boeing 747 have in common? They’re just a few of the iconic exhibits to be found in the London Science Museum’s Flight gallery. From mankind’s earliest dreams of flight to the wide-body aeroplanes of today, it tells the absorbing story of our desire to take to the skies. It’s not just for aircraft buffs. Overhead walkways allow you to get up close to aeroplanes suspended in the air and examine exhibits from the pioneer days of aviation. Then get your thrills on high-octane flight simulators and don the latest virtual reality headsets for an immersive 360 degree trip into space.
It was also the venue this week for a dinner with Amadeus customers to acknowledge a more recent historical event. On October 21, 1987 Amadeus was created with a mission to simplify the travel experience for all and this week we are celebrating our 30th anniversary. We were lucky enough to be joined in the festivities by leading lights from all parts of the UK travel industry. Amadeus’ Travel Channels Vice President of Travel Channels in EMEA, Joost Schuring and UK & Ireland Managing Director, Champa Magesh were able to say a personal thank you to some of our customer’s, both old and new, for their unswerving loyalty and support. We’d have loved to have been joined by every single one of them but sadly the venue isn’t large enough. The anniversary is a chance to show our appreciation and to reflect on the importance of all of the customer’s we serve. Earlier in the Summer we took to the roads with the Amadeus ice cream van and it was pleasure to meet so many of you from all around the country. If we haven’t had the chance to say thank you in person yet, we toast you all!
When you think about, it’s mind-blowing just how much the travel industry has changed in such a relatively shortly period. Way back 1987 when Air France, Iberia, Lufthansa and SAS got together to form Amadeus, things were quite different. The internet didn’t exist. All trips were planned using brochures and travel guides and if you didn’t have your paper airline ticket you weren’t getting on the plane.
Fast forward to today and travellers are now more empowered than ever before. Travel companies are using technology to personalise and streamline their customer’s experiences unlike anything imaginable. At Amadeus we understand this need for change. We are committed to making the future of travel even better; connecting the industry, harnessing emerging technologies and finding new ways to help travel businesses master the recipe for success.
We’ve been looking back on three decades of travel history and wondering what the future has in store. From walkmans to the web in the 80s to the trends like Blockchain and AI most likely to disrupt the industry today. Check out this interactive timeline to salute innovation in travel past, present and future.
30 years is just the beginning. We couldn’t have done it without so many talented travel industry partners, and for that we wholeheartedly thank every single one of you. Here’s to an even more rewarding 30 years to come.
