Successful businesses are usually those that aren’t afraid to take risks and stand out for doing something different. A sense of passion is a common characteristic for companies like this too, a driving force to go the extra mile and find a new and better way.
With our Amadeus colleagues from around the world, we’ve been getting inspired by the stories of ingenious businesses from outside of the travel industry that haven’t been afraid to follow their dreams. With a background in trend consulting and styling, Tiffany McCrary’s real passion was sourcing highly original vintage clothing. She owned boutiques and showrooms in Chicago’s Hyde Park and Pilsen neighbourhoods, as well as New York’s financial district. Her largest boutique was a 3500ft² concept store in the heart of SoHo. After losing her lease to make space for Stella McCartney’s NY flagship outlet she needed to take stock.
An alternative to costly bricks and mortar was needed so she decided to reboot and created a business model that was much more sustainable; one that allowed her to take the focus off the squeeze of multinational brands and astronomical, ever-increasing rents. Yet at the same time let her reconnect with all that was special about running your own business. She purchased her first trailer from the Bushwick Collective for the Arts, and thus, New York’s first Mobile Vintage Shop was born. Keeping with the culture of the neighbourhood, her new direction was a late night, $10 prix fixe shopping concept that would fuse the thrill of thrifting with the shopping experience of a handpicked boutique. The Mobile Vintage Shop soon became a huge success and Tiffany has now quickly expanded with a second mobile store serving up her hand-picked, one-off pieces to beau monde Brooklynites as well as costume designers and stylists from the film and fashion worlds. In October 2015, Tiffany went full circle and has now opened 28 Scott Vintage, a flagship store for the Mobile Vintage Shop in Brooklyn’s trendy Bushwick district.
See how a more mobile approach to selling vintage clothing around New York’s hip Brooklyn neighbourhoods has transformed her passion into a thriving business – attracting the attention of the New York Times and media around the world.
