Recently I was planning a short weekend break and settled on a couple of nights in Gibraltar. If you have visited Gibraltar before, you will know that the choice of hotels is pretty limited, due to the small amount of space to build on. On previous visits I would usually head straight to the Rock Hotel, although while doing some internet searching I was interested to find out that a new hotel opened on the ‘Rock’ a year ago. At Amadeus, we are constantly looking at ways the industry are shaping the future of travel, and this hotel fit the bill perfectly!
The Sunborn Gibraltar is a purpose built 142 metre ‘superyacht hotel’. It was built in Malaysia and floated to Gibraltar to be permanently moored in the Ocean Village Marina. The hotel has 189 rooms, restaurant, bars, pool, and fitness suite and spa as well as conference and events facilities. In fact everything and more you would expect from a standard hotel.
One of the advantages of the location of the hotel is its proximity to the airport, shopping, bars and restaurants; everything is within walking distance. Mind you, if you know Gibraltar, you’ll know that anything on the island is within walking distance! Our room was on the starboard side facing Spain and overlooking the runway (I said the airport was walking distance!). Luckily most days there are only 3 flights so the aircraft noise really wasn’t an issue. It’s certainly unusual to open the curtains to see an Airbus trundling past the window though!
Once inside the hotel, you really could forget that you were on a ship and just enjoy the luxury both inside the rooms and in the public areas. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast is to be recommended.
The Sunborn group also has a superyacht hotel positioned on the Thames, a short walk from the Excel Centre so you don’t have travel too far to try them out.
The Sunborn Gibraltar can be found in Hotels Plus in Amadeus Selling Platform. Simply search by hotel name and destination. Why not take a look?
