Having worked in the travel technology industry for more than 12 years, I count it a privilege to have met countless travel professionals from all over the world. While the culture, weather, food and language of each country or region can be vastly different – there is one thing that travel people seem to share: a passion for travel!
Combined with that passion for travel is my genuine interest in technology. Not technology for the sake of it, but technology that enables business success. That is why I am delighted to have been nominated as a candidate for a place on the ITT’s board of directors.
Amadeus and the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT)
In 2012, Amadeus became the exclusive technology partner to the ITT, the UK’s only professional membership body for individuals employed in the travel industry.
At the time of announcing the partnership, Dr Steven Freudmann, ITT Chairman said, “By working with Amadeus, we see an opportunity to help our members gain a current understanding of the changing role that travel technology increasingly plays. It is the meeting of two like-minded organisations, both intent on raising standards in the industry.”
I endorse Steven’s sentiment, which is why Amadeus has extended its Passport to Travel course for ITT members in addition to advising Leeds Met University on the technology modules of their innovative degree courses. I have also enjoyed personally contributing to individual coaching sessions with ITT members on an ad-hoc basis.
A people business underpinned by technology
Although travel is still very much a people-oriented business, technology supports the role of today’s travel professionals. Simply put, the industry could not hope to meet the needs of 21st century traveller’s without the necessary tools. Time and again, perhaps most recently with TUI, it has been demonstrated that successful travel companies do not treat technology as an afterthought. That’s why I believe it is vital that technology is represented among the ITT’s board of directors – a missing piece in the line-up of the current esteemed board membership.
Thinking back over what our partnership has achieved in a relatively short time, I am immensely proud of the insight that we have shared with ITT members. For example, at the 2013 conference, Amadeus expert in online shopping technology, Sebastien Gibergues, explained why counter-intuitively; too much choice can be bad for business (an insight that led to the development of Amadeus Featured Results).
Another personal highlight was presenting Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, with a prestigious ITT Odyssey Award. This is particularly gratifying because Amadeus has been working with easyJet since 2007 in a partnership that has gone from strength to strength.
If you are an ITT member and if you agree that technology plays a vital role in the success story of modern travel, I would be honoured to receive your vote and represent this strategically important and dynamic sector of the industry. If I am successful, you have my personal commitment that I will be an active contributor to the board of directors. I am someone who genuinely believes that by working together, we can shape the future of travel.
