Sir Christopher Wren, famed architect of London’s iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, also designed the beautiful Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Although you may not have heard of what has been described as a ‘twin-domed riverside masterpiece’ you have probably seen it. That’s because this impressive setting on the banks of London’s river Thames is regularly used as the backdrop to Hollywood blockbusters, including the recent Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
With its centuries-old historical significance connecting land with sea faring traditions, the Old Royal Naval College provided a picture-postcard setting for the UK launch of Amadeus Cruise Shop. As its name suggests, this smarter technology is an exciting new cruise shopping and booking application to help our customers succeed in cruise.
The UK cruise industry is buoyant (pun intended). Despite the challenging economy of the past few years, some 1.8 million UK residents are expected to take a cruise holiday in 2013, and the number continues to rise.
Being an island nation, you could argue that Britons share an affinity with the sea. But there is no need to guess at what makes a cruise holiday so appealing to 21st century travellers. To coincide with the launch of Amadeus Cruise Shop, we commissioned a survey of more than 2000 UK consumers to determine their current perception of cruise holidays. 29% of respondents said they liked the idea of waking up in a new location each day. Another benefit of cruise holidays is the ability to enjoy a multi-centre holiday, but only having to unpack once (26%).
For our cruise specialists and travel agency partners (as well as cruise lines) the potential for more cruise bookings is significant: 32% of the UK population would be tempted to trade their land based holiday for a cruise, especially if the pricing was comparable to an all-inclusive style resort. You can read more about the research findings here.
The VIP guests attending the launch event were impressed with the new technology on display. After watching demonstrations and asking questions, one person commented how what they saw promises ‘a leap forward’ in the shopping and booking of cruise holidays. We couldn’t agree more!
