Travel is a passion of mine. As Marcel Proust once said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Travel gives us a new way of looking at the world and its peoples.
Few would disagree that travel is a highly emotive subject – and rightly so. You can barely talk about travel without a sense of contented satisfaction or keen anticipation. Who wouldn’t be moved by watching an ochre sun dip into the deep blue Pacific Ocean off the coast of Tahiti, or giving friendly lemurs a piggy-back ride while feeding them with bananas on a deserted island in Madagascar? I have been privileged to experience both.
But travellers are changing. This is the 21st century after all and the role of technology not only shapes our daily lives but arguably makes us more impatient, more demanding and for some people, more in need of a total escape. For the travel and tourism industry, the changing nature of travellers provides a golden opportunity for all stakeholders to step-up and guide people on an unforgettable journey of the mind, body and spirit.
That’s why, for the first time, Amadeus has joined up with World Travel Market to create the Amadeus & WTM Travel Experience Awards 2013. These awards are designed to recognise best in class travel suppliers – wherever they are based in the world – who are defining and raising standards to address the needs of 21st century travellers. If you work with tourist boards and other suppliers that deserve recognition in any of the travel experience categories below, please urge them to enter. Entry is by self-nomination and all the details can be found on the dedicated website. The closing date for entries is 16 August 2013. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, 6th November during World Travel Market, which is held in London’s Excel exhibition centre.
